AI sales call assistant: what it does and how to choose one
Search for an AI sales call assistant and you will find two very different kinds of product under one name. One kind records the call and sends you a summary. The other helps while you are still talking. This page explains the difference so you can pick the one that fits the problem you actually have.
What an AI sales call assistant does
Whatever the brand, the work falls into three moments around a call. A tool may cover one, two or all three.
| Moment | What the assistant does | What it is good for |
|---|---|---|
| Before the call | Reads your notes, the buyer's website and past conversations, then writes a short brief. | Walking in knowing who they are and what they are likely to object to. |
| During the call | Listens to the conversation and suggests what to say or ask next. | Pricing questions, objections and the moments where you freeze. |
| After the call | Writes a summary, lists what you promised and drafts the follow-up email. | Not losing commitments and saving the hour of admin. |
Most products on the market started with the third job, because transcribing and summarising is the easier problem. Live suggestions are harder: they have to arrive within a second or two, or the moment has passed.
A tool that helps you on the call, or an AI that makes the call?
The phrase is read in two ways. Some people mean an AI voice agent that phones leads and talks to them for you. Those products automate outbound calling. This page is about the other kind: a tool that helps a person who is already on the call, by suggesting what to say, preparing a brief and writing the summary.
Palmcard is the second kind. A human takes the call. Nothing on the other end is artificial, and the card is only for you. If you want something that dials and speaks for you, that is a different category with different questions about disclosure and consent.
Live help or notes after the call
If your problem is remembering what was said, a note taker is enough. If your problem is what to say in the moment, you need something that works during the call. The two are not the same product, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake.
We wrote a longer comparison in AI note taker vs real-time call assistant. The short version: a note taker helps you after the call, a live assistant helps while it is happening, and some people use both.
How Palmcard works on a sales call
Palmcard is a desktop app for Mac and Windows. You open it before a call and it does three things.
- Before. It reads the notes and documents you give it and prepares a short brief for the meeting.
- During. It hears both sides of the call, keeps you and the buyer apart, and writes a private card with what you could say next. In our end-to-end tests the line appears 0.5 to 1.1 seconds after the other person stops talking.
- After. It writes a summary, lists the promises made and drafts the follow-up. The transcript and summaries are stored on your computer unless you choose to keep calls on your Palmcard account.
That example shows a rule built into the product: when the answer is not in your documents, the card tells you to say so and come back, instead of inventing a price or a feature. It also works in 25 languages, which matters if you sell in a language that is not your first. See live translation for calls.
What to check before you choose one
- When does it help? Only after the call, or live too. Ask to see a live suggestion, not a screenshot.
- Does a bot join the meeting? Some tools add a visible participant to every call. Some companies ban that. Others listen through your computer instead. Palmcard does the second. See bot-free AI meeting assistants.
- Where do your calls go? Find out what is stored, where, and which outside services receive audio or text. Palmcard lists this on its security and privacy page.
- Does it make things up? A good assistant says it does not know. Test it with a question your notes cannot answer.
- How is it priced? Per user, per hour or per call. Hours of use are easier to predict if you only make a few important calls.
- Consent. Anything that transcribes a call raises consent questions in many places. See is it legal to use AI on calls.
Where it will not help
A live assistant is a prompt, not a replacement for knowing your product. It can be wrong, so you stay responsible for what you say. It will not fix a weak offer, and reading a card takes attention, so some people find it distracting at first. It hears what your computer plays and your microphone records, so it does not work for a call held on a separate phone. Palmcard itself runs on a Mac or Windows computer. Language support differs by language and the non-English transcriber is slightly slower than the English one.
Use it openly
The card is for your eyes only and is excluded from screen sharing and recordings on Mac and Windows. That does not remove the need to be open with the other person. Where calls are transcribed, tell them at the start, the way you would for a recording. Palmcard reminds you at the start of every call.

Questions people ask
Is an AI sales call assistant the same as an AI voice agent?
No. A voice agent makes or answers calls for you. A sales call assistant like Palmcard helps a person who is on the call, with a brief before, suggestions during and a summary after.
What is an AI sales call assistant?
Software that listens to a sales call and helps with it: a brief before, suggestions during, and a summary after. Some products only do the summary. Palmcard also writes what you could say next while the call is live.
Is there a free AI sales call assistant?
Many note takers have free plans with limits. Palmcard has a free 3-day trial with 10 minutes of real calls and no card needed, then plans from €9 a month.
Does it work with Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams?
Yes. Palmcard listens to what your computer plays and what your microphone hears, so it works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Slack huddles and phone calls taken through your laptop.
Does the buyer see it or get a notification?
Nothing joins the call, and the card is excluded from screen sharing and recordings on Mac and Windows. You should still tell the buyer you use an assistant, in the same way you would mention a recording.
What happens when it does not know the answer?
It tells you to say so honestly, for example that you will check and come back today. It does not invent prices, features or results that are not in your documents.
Can it help me sell in a language that is not my first?
Yes. Palmcard supports 25 languages. It transcribes the call in the language spoken and writes your line in it, with the meaning shown in your own language.
